Rattan and Brass Homeware, Designed in the UK and Handcrafted in India
Hastshilp (said “hast-shilp”) is a family-owned business based in the UK, run by Megan and Aadil. Its rattan and brass homeware is designed in the UK and handcrafted in India. Aadil, who is originally from India, has a background in artisanal craftsmanship, and Megan a love of interiors. The business began when they found few high-quality rattan homewares on the market while cane production in India was falling.
All Hastshilp rattan and brass pieces are made by independent artisans in North India, who work from their own shops and homes in the traditional Indian method of cane craftsmanship, with hand tools, water and heat rather than machines. The rattan and cane come from Northeast India, and the rattan is scraped rather than bleached. The brass is solid, not plated, cast and detailed by hand, and mostly left unlacquered so that it develops a patina. Hastshilp runs a training programme that teaches younger makers cane craftsmanship, and sends almost all its pieces in recyclable cardboard boxes.
The range includes rattan pendant and wall light shades, mirrors, dining chairs, side tables and benches, trays, planters, bins and baskets, and brass hooks, handles and toilet roll holders.
